About Me

A bit about who am I as a filmmaker, my filmmaking journey, where I am now and where I want my career to go.

Hi;

My name is Charles, and I’m an independent filmmaker and director from Manchester currently living and studying in Bristol on UWE’s filmmaking course. As well as taking on commissions/client-based work, collaborations and finding industry experience, I’m available for work as a second AD or script supervisor, or as an assistant in production or post-production departments. I have experience working on a range of different kinds of film and productions, but I’m mostly interested in serious narrative and documentary. My main desire is in creating art that means something in a wider context to a whole range of people. I’m a firm believer that films shouldn’t just serve as a device to entertain, but they should also have something to say on a much larger scale - if you have the platform, you should use it, for whatever that may be.

As someone from a northern, working class background, I’ve worked hard to have been able to access to the opportunities I have to get to where I am now. I started studying film in high school, going on to be a part of Phil Drinkwater’s (Writer, Broadcast Signal Intrusion, Queensbury Pictures, 2021) Film Studies Course at Xaverian College, where I finished with an A. After college, I left education to try and make my way into the industry whilst continuing to work. During this time, I found it very difficult to find experience and find people interested in making films, so I chose to go to University. I don’t see my time at UWE Bristol so much as more school, but instead as a professional investment in myself in order to advance my career, and so I hold it and myself to a professional standard, which I believe is reflected in my work, for which I have been recognised on the Dean’s list for maintaining a consistently excellent standard.

Eventually I see myself directing my own feature films, inspired by the works of people like Ken Loach, Emerald Fennel, and Peter Watkins, focusing on the issues and struggles relevant to my community that can be understood and appreciated far beyond that not only have something to say, but inspire discussion amongst audiences, especially concerning themes and issues aligned with my own realities from my working-class background, filling gaps in representation and a voice filled currently by very few.
